Mr. Sands was a close friend of James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke and an important colleague in planning The Duke Endowment. Mrs. Mary D. B. T. Semans, great-niece of James B. Duke, said Mr. Sands “lived for their enterprises, their goals and for Duke University.” After a short time working in banking, he joined James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke in New York at the age of 24. Mr. Sands was named an original Trustee of The Duke Endowment, serving from December 11, 1924, until his death on April 22, 1960. He was elected a Trustee of Duke University in 1946 and was a key figure in the transformation of Trinity College into Duke University.
