Anthony Biddle, Jr.
- Trustee, Original Trustee, 1924–1930
Mr. Biddle, the Philadelphia-born son of millionaire Anthony J. D. Biddle, Sr., married Mary Lillian Duke, daughter of Benjamin N. Duke, and niece of James B. Duke, in 1915. A New York Times story at the time said the wedding was planned for James B. Duke’s “country residence” at Somerville, N.J. They had two children, Mary Duke Biddle (Trent Semans) and Nicholas Duke Biddle. He served as one of the original Trustees of the Endowment. Mr. Biddle served in the U.S. Army during World War I and again in 1944, joining the staff of Dwight D. Eisenhower and reaching the rank of Major General. He also served as an American diplomat and as an ambassador to numerous countries, including Poland at the start of World War II. Mr. Biddle, also an elegantly dressed socialite, was featured on the cover of Life Magazine in 1943.
