The Greer, S.C., native was known for his warm sense of humor and zest for living. He had a life-long interest in sports and loved to play golf. He was elected a Trustee of The Duke Endowment in 1951, and served as chair from 1960 to 1970. He retired from the board in 1973. A resolution adopted by the Trustees in his honor credited “his warm sense of humor, his zest for living, and his quiet approach to the affairs of each day.”
