Mr. Myers was a nationally recognized leader in the textile industry, having spent his career at Burlington Industries from 1947 until his retirement as Chairman of the Board in 1974. Before that, the Charleston, W.Va. native began his career with the Bank of New York and Wachovia Bank. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1994, he was elected to the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame. Mr. Myers served as a Trustee of The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, on the Board of the Wesley Long Hospital, and as a Trustee of his alma mater, Davidson College. He was a valued member of The Duke Endowment’s Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1998. He was a preacher’s son with a reputation as a gracious and dedicated individual. Mary D.B.T Semans, then-Chair of the Board, said at a 1998 luncheon in his honor that Mr. Myers “has been the voice of steadiness, patience and wisdom” for the Endowment.
