Erskine Bowles

Mr. Bowles, a Charlotte investment banker, enjoyed wide-ranging careers in business, education and public service. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and afterward began his financial career at Morgan Stanley in New York. He later founded Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co., a Charlotte-based investment banking firm. He has served on numerous higher education, health care, and corporate boards, including Norfolk Southern Corp., the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority, Facebook, Johnson C. Smith University, Davidson College and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President of the University of North Carolina System from 2005-2010. In politics, he held several positions in the Clinton Administration, including White House Chief of Staff from 1996 to 1998. He was elected to The Duke Endowment’s Board in 2000, and served until 2001, when he resigned to run for a U.S. Senate seat from North Carolina. He eventually lost to Republican Elizabeth Dole.
