Hugh Chapman

Mr. Chapman, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955 and served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force for three years. He then earned a graduate degree from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He began his banking career with Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina, and through mergers, was named Chairman of NationsBank South from 1992-1997. He was a director of the Federal Reserve Bank and was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Chapman was named to the S.C. Business Hall of Fame and elected President of the S.C. Bankers Association. Archie Davis, Chairman of the Endowment’s board at the time of Mr. Chapman’s election, said, “Hugh Chapman brings a distinguished record of accomplishment and service to the Board of Trustees of the Endowment. We will certainly look to him for leadership in all facets of the Endowment’s interests.” Mr. Chapman served on the Board for 26 years, from 1981 to his death in 2007.
