James R. Felts, Jr.

Mr. Felts joined the Endowment as a Field Representative for the Hospital and Child Care Divisions before he was named Executive Director. Mr. Felts served on the board of visitors of Duke University Medical Center, the advisory board of the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust, and the executive committees of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission and the North Carolina Regional Medical Program. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina and South Carolina hospital associations, and he was an Honorary Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Major Endowment Milestones:
- Led efforts to change hospital accounting systems from cash to accrual basis
- Began a focus on medical education programs in community teaching hospitals, which led to North Carolina’s Area Health Education Center programs
