Norman Cocke

  • Trustee, Original Trustee, 1924–1971

Mr. Cocke graduated from New York Law School and practiced law in New York before moving to North Carolina to join the Duke Power Company, serving as President from 1953 to 1959. He was Chairman of the Duke University Trustees from 1954 to 1959. He was a director of J.P. Stevens & Co., and the Piedmont and Northern Railway Company. Mr. Cocke was named an original Trustee of The Duke Endowment in 1924 and resigned in 1971. During that time, he served as Assistant Secretary for 10 years, Vice Chairman for 26 years and Honorary Chairman for 11 years. He served on several Trustee committees and was an honorary pallbearer at James B. Duke’s funeral.
