Rhett N. Mabry

Rhett Mabry is President of The Duke Endowment. A native of Greensboro, N.C., he joined the Endowment in 1992 as Associate Director of Health Care. He became Director of the Child Care program area in 1998 and was named Vice President of the Endowment in 2009. He became President on July 1, 2016. Mr. Mabry holds a Master of Health Administration from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill. Before joining the Endowment, he held managerial positions at Ernst & Young and HCA West Paces Ferry Hospital. Mr. Mabry has served on the North Carolina Governor’s Early Childhood Advisory Council and is a past board chair of the Southeastern Council of Foundations. He currently chairs the board of Candid, a national organization that compiles and evaluates philanthropic data.

Major Endowment Milestones:

  • Established a cross-program emphasis on early childhood as a way to intervene early in social problems and produce greater impact.
  • Helped forge a major partnership with Blue Meridian Partners in support of the Get Ready Guilford Initiative, a 10-year effort to improve and equalize opportunity in Guilford County, N.C., by making large, targeted investments in young children and their caregivers.
  • Guided comprehensive review to better clarify grantmaking strategies
  • Increased emphasis on producing measurable impact and learning lessons from both successes and failures in grantmaking
