Robert L. Flowers

Dr. Flowers, a native of Alexander County in North Carolina, graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1891 and began his career as a Professor of Mathematics at Trinity College. He was elected the school’s Vice President in 1925. He succeeded Dr. William Preston Few in 1941 as President of Duke University. He retired from that position in 1949 and served as Chancellor until his death in 1951 at age 80. He served 60 years at Trinity College and Duke University. He also served as a Trustee of The Duke Endowment from 1926 to 1951 and was named to the Committee on Rural Churches and Committee on Communications.
