William Bell

Mr. Bell was born in Stroudsburg, Pa., was named an original Trustee of the Endowment by Mr. Duke in 1924. Mr. Bell graduated from Haverford College with an M.A. in political science and received an LL.B. from Columbia University. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1903. He later served as personal counsel to James B. Duke. He worked for American Cyanamid and was named President in 1922. He was credited with diversifying the company materials and products. He was noted for revealing the shortcomings of the National Recovery Act, a main component of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.
