William Anlyan, MD

    Dr. Anlyan, Chancellor and Professor of Duke University for over four decades, was born in Egypt and came to the United States at the age of 18. He graduated from Yale University and its medical school and came to Duke University as an intern in general and thoracic surgery. He was Chairman of Research America, was active in the World Health Organization, and led Duke University’s delegation to the Peoples Republic of China in 1975 to consult on health care. At an early age, he was identified as a leader, a builder and an innovator in medical education and was recognized for nurturing the careers of colleagues. He was a man of quiet animation, wit, imagination, humor, and purpose. He loved to play the piano and sing and was an avid tennis player and ardent supporter of the arts. Dr. Anlyan received numerous honors for his contributions to the medical and science fields. He served on the Endowment’s Board of Trustees from 1990 to 2014.
